From Zero To Hero

If you decide to quit, give up and accept failure when trying to reach a particular goal, the consequences could affect millions of people around the world.

Many people have fulfilled their own dreams, and successfully changed and improved lives of others by providing everything from encouragement, motivation, business developments, leadership, direction, entertainment, heritage, employment and much more.

Major benefits and advancements never would have happened if these determined persistent committed people were not able to endure the tremendous amount of failure, rejection and countless obstacles they had to overcome. Here are just a few people

Abraham Lincoln’s business failed. He lost in elections when he ran for legislature, congress and the senate. He also lost the vice presidential nomination. He could not afford Law School, so he taught himself and became a lawyer. He was the sixteenth president of the United States. To this day he is still considered to be one of the most popular and most successful of all the presidents.

Michael Jordan did not make his high school varsity basketball team the first year he tried out. He went on to win two Olympic gold medals in basketball. He has NBA Most Valuable Player titles and he led his team to six basketball World Championships.

J. K. Rowlings submitted her first Harry Potter book to several publishers and they kept rejecting it. The Harry Potter books and movies have become one of the most successful children series ever. J. K. Rowlings went from welfare to multimillionaire.

Alex Haley went to the National Archives in Washington D.C. searching through thousands of documents and endless rolls of microfilm trying to research his family history to verify the stories his ancestors told. For the longest time, he found absolutely nothing. When he finally found the needle in the haystack, it all paid off. People all over the world were glued to their television sets for an entire week watching Roots. It broke all kinds of television broadcasting records.

Sherwood Schwartz kept getting rejected by television networks to put on his shows Gilligan’s Island and the Brady Bunch. Both of these shows were so successful that they have been in prime time and reruns for about forty years.

Mrs. Debbie Fields was nineteen years old with no prior business experience
when she was turned down by every bank in Oakland, California that she tried to get a loan to start one cookie store. Later she became the founder and owner of her own cookie company with branches all over the world. She was a millionaire before her thirtieth birthday.

Bill Gates wrote his first software program when he was thirteen years old. As a teenager he then wrote the software for his Traf-O-Data computer and tried to sell it. Nobody wanted the machine. Instead of trying to sell hardware, Gates and his partner Paul Allen decided to write software. Gates sent numerous letters from his college dorm room to all the big computer companies offering to write their software. Nobody was interested. Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard University, started the Microsoft Corporation and eventually became the richest person in the world.

Bessie Coleman could not get into any Pilot school in the United States. She went to France, got her pilot’s license, and returned to the USA. She was the first black female American airplane pilot.

Madonna was living in the streets and eating out of trash cans while trying to get into show business. She kept getting rejections. Now she is one of the top female performers and recording artists ever. She has won numerous awards.

Oprah Winfrey loss her broadcasting job then went on to become a billionaire and hosting one of the most popular talk shows in the world.

Lance Armstrong was diagnosed with cancer which made it unlikely that he would be able to compete in cycling. After that he won seven first place titles riding his bicycle in the Tour de France, which is considered to be one of the most difficult and most challenging athletic competitions in the world.

Wilma Rudolph was diagnosed with polio and doctors told her that she may never be able to walk. After that she went on to win three Olympic Gold Medals in Track.

Colonel Harland Sanders was a senior citizen with little money. He kept getting rejected when he tried to get anybody to share the profits with him using his fried chicken recipe. Eventually his is Kentucky Fried Chicken became the largest fast food fried chicken restaurant on earth.

Jennifer Hudson lost when she competed on American Idol. She went on to win an Academy Award in her first movie for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Effie in Dreamgirls.

The list can go on and on. It is easy to look backwards into the past because hindsight is 20-20 vision. Looking at the present objectively with an open mind and believing the potential of possibilities for the future is much more difficult. However, it also could be more rewarding for everybody.

Once A Year Contact

I was at a backyard barbecue talking to a friend when she saw somebody across the yard that she had not seen in a long time. She excused herself and went across the yard to talk. I did not pay much attention. I just continued to socialize.

A while later when I caught up with her again, I asked her how was the reunion with her old friend. She filled me in with some information that I did not know. Apparently, she was very good friends with Jane many years ago in high school. As the years passed, their relationship was down to the 2 of them sending each other a Christmas card once a year.

There were no telephones calls made to each other during the years. There were no Holiday Newsletters inside any of the Christmas cards. There was no personal letters, not even a short note. She sent them a card every year and signed her name. They sent her a card every year that was always signed The Doe Family.

At the barbecue she saw Jane’s husband and walked up to him to say Hi and where’s Jane? He told her that he and Jane got divorced about 6 years ago, he remarried and he introduced her to the wife that he had been married to for the past 4 years, Mary and their child.

He told her that Jane moved out of town shortly after their divorce. Since she always sends a card addressed To: Mr. and Mrs. John Doe, he always responds and sends his card to her every year addressed the same way, From: Mr. and Mrs. John Doe and signs it The Doe Family.

Her friend Jane never saw any of the Christmas cards that were sent to her over the past 6 years.

Everything Or Nothing

I went with a friend to the store. All she needed was about 20 basic personal items. It took almost an hour to find everything. There was one item left on her list and eventually we realized that they did not have it.

Well let’s check out what you have and we can go somewhere else to get the last and final item. No, she did not want to stand in a line twice. She wanted to buy everything from the same place.

Now let’s see. If you only have one check left in your checkbook and no other form of payment available, I guess that might make sense. But if you are using cash, credit card, debit card or have more that one check, I don’t get it. She was using cash.

So she put the basket on the side with all the stuff in it and we left. When we went to the next store, it took about another hour to find everything again. It would have taken less time altogether to just wait in 2 lines.

Independence Requires Persistence

Today is the 4th of July 2007. It is the United States 231st Birthday.

Since this is a blog for people who are not celebrities who are mostly unknown to the general public but have a story, this would be the perfect time and place to acknowledge the 2nd President of the United States, John Adams. His story is one of the biggest to ever hit American soil.

If it had not been for the constant persistence, the relentless determination, the stubbornness, the dedication and the word they used back in those days the “pigheadedness” of John Adams, the United Stated probably would not have had an Independence Day on July 4, 1776. It is uncertain as to if and when the USA would have had an Independence Day at anytime in the future.

When people list the most Popular Presidents, they usually include:
George Washington, Abraham Lincoln. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.

When listing the most Popular Founding Fathers, they usually include:
Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Hancock with his great big huge signature.

The list of some of the most Popular American Citizens include:
Betsy Ross, Albert Einstein, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Bill Gates.

John Adams’ name almost never comes up even though he deserves most of the credit for one of the biggest holidays in the United States which is the 4th of July.

Luckily for the United States, it was John Adams who insisted that the National Bird would be an Eagle. He won that argument.

Thomas Jefferson wanted it to be a Dove.

If Benjamin Franklin has his way on the matter, the United States’ National Bird would have been a Turkey. Imagine the impact of that at Thanksgiving time.

4th of July TRIVIA

Thomas Jefferson was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence. However, other people and especially Benjamin Franklin (who deserves much more credit than he normally gets) had writing contributions, revisions and did editing to the document.

Interestingly both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on the same day exactly 50 years later to the day on July 4, 1826.
